United States Lime and Minerals, Inc. is a public company traded on the NASDAQ Global MarketŪ under the symbol USLM and conducts its business through two segments, Lime and Limestone Operations and Natural Gas Interests. The Company manufactures lime and limestone products from high purity calcium limestone deposits located in Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas, from where it services markets in the Southwestern and South-Central United States. The primary uses of these products are for construction of highways, streets and parking lots, manufacturing steel, paper and chemicals and in environmental applications such as purifying drinking water, municipal sanitation and the scrubbing of flue gases from fossil fuel boilers. The Company's pulverized limestone is used primarily in the production of roofing shingles. Lime and limestone are also vital to agriculture as soil treatments to correct acidity, and as a component of animal feeds. Minor uses extend to mine safety dusts and land remediation. The use of lime in mortars has been traced back 7,000 to 14,000 years in ancient civilizations including the building of the pyramids in Egypt. Today, lime ranks fifth among industrial chemicals used in the United States with an annual commercial production that recently exceeded 21,000,000 tons. The Company
also holds certain royalty and working interests with respect to natural gas
produced from wells located on approximately 4,300 acres of land in Johnson
County, Texas in the Barnett Shale Formation.
